Care at Home
Just because you need care does not mean that you have to leave your home. You may not want to move into a care home.
Instead you could choose to have a carer come and live in your home with you, to help you live the life you want to live.
Although you could arrange this privately, you may have difficulties if your carer is ill or taking a break. Instead it is usually better to organise you care through a registered care agency. That way you know that your carer will be properly trained and have had a criminal record check. If they are ill or on holiday the agency will be responsible for finding you a replacement.
To give carers a break you will usually find that your agency appoints around three carers who will look after you for a number of days at a time.
The main problem with live-in care is the cost. On average, 24 hour care at home costs a similar amount to a stay in a good quality care home. In addition you still have to pay for your food and have all the costs of running your property.
As you remain in your home you do not have its value to use to fund your care, although there are some equity release products that may allow you to access some of your homes value.
Care Visits
If you don’t need care at night you might be able to get by with a number of care visits a day. This will be significantly less expensive than 24-hour a day care as the same carer can visit a number of people each day. Many people have carers who will visit early to help them get up in the morning, at midday to make lunch, and in the evening to get ready for bed.
The problem that many people find with these services is that they can be unreliable. This is not the fault of the carers or the agency but just the unpredictability of peoples lives. If the first person the carer visits in the morning has had a nasty fall at night, they will have to arrange an ambulance, sit with them, contact the family etc. They may be delayed by many hours and that will affect every visit they make for the rest of the day.
