Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
A Health and Personal Welfare LPA allows you to appoint someone to take decisions about your personal healthcare and welfare.
Unlike the Property and Financial Affairs LPA, your Health and Welfare attorney can only make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make them yourself. This might be if you were in a coma, or were suffering from dementia.
Your attorneys will be able to make significant decisions on your behalf including
~ giving or refusing consent for medical treatment, including surgery
~ where you live - for example, whether you stay at home or move into a care home
~ or, if you expressly consent to the on the LPA form, the decision to refuse 'life sustaining treatment'
You can also give your attorney the right to make decisions about your day to day welfare such as your routine, diet or dress.
Your attorney cannot make financial decisions or buy or sell things on your behalf.
